Open Office Suite: Free Open Office Suite: Fully compatible and cross-compatible to/with MS-Word,
Excel, Publisher, Front Page, Paint/Imaging, & fully handles (reads and even creates) Adobe pdf files.
http://www.openoffice.org

Front Page Express: It's on the win98 1st-edition cd-rom, and also included for free with Internet Explorer 5.0
downloads. I found explorer 5.0 on my msmoney cd. Makes it's own desktop icon.
It can also be downloaded from the web at:

P.S. Microsoft Word does do html files, but microsoft's coding is very messy and confusing.

Netscape Composer is an HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)
editor that allows you to create and edit web pages. Composer
is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, so you
can display how your page will look to the reader as you're
creating it. It is not necessary for you to know HTML, since most
of the basic HTML functions are available as commands from
the toolbars and menus. However, Composer also lets you edit
the HTML source if you want.

I tried each, and the mozilla composers did best of all the open source. Of
coarse, none can compare to dreamweaver.

Mozilla's Composers, NVU/Mozilla/Netscape, had problems with some tables in
tables, problems in selecting some tables, problematic cut/paste/delete and
in background images in cells. I could work with this one, went furthest
with this one, something I could work with.

Selida is text based, after all. It does have a split window so you can see
both text and graphics

Open office does not allow nesting tables in tables, and it wont put an
image beside an image; it stacks them on top of each other instead.

Frontpage express is outdated, so I didn't try that one.

Then you're one up on me, I tried Selida (out of curiousity) It couldn't
open an existing file ('Open File Not Found'), tried to open a template
('Necessary VXD <?????> missing or not registered'). That was enough for
me, 'Uninstall Selida'.

Nothing will open the template except for Dreamweaver, Adobe Pagemaker, or
FrontPage. Nothing else supports templates.

Dreamweaver, the best, has a free download, trial download. Other than
that, Mozilla Composer or OpenOffice are the next best things. NVU works on
linux, which is the same program as Mozilla Composer

Mozilla works fine, but it rewrites/reformats code, so you have to watch
all file paths on links, correcting when needed.

OpenOffice aint bad, but it writes code in all Capital Letters, for some
strange reason, which is odd, but it does do the trick.

I aleady have msoffice, so Mozilla would be my first choice in Freeware
WYSIWYG graphical HTML Editors.

Really? The Nvu website says that it is sponsored by Linspire, not Netscape.

Nope. When your needs go beyond simply typing something and having it
appear online (lookie, lookie maw!) Nvu is going to fall down on the job
and you'll have to learn a different editor.

Put together a web page with Nvu, then click on the "Source" tab and
enter oh, some metadata ... maybe a few keywords. Now click on any other
tab. Now return to the Source tab. Presto change-o alakazam ... where'd
the code go?

I got tired of that and have been using CuteHTML Pro for the past week.
I like it well enough that I've decided to purchase it even though the
bulk of my website should be developed before my 30 day trial runs out.

They've made a good quality product and should be rewarded with the sale.
